I am a publicist, activist, communications strategist and writer with over 10 years of experience in politics, political media and non-profit marketing.
Until recently, I was the Publicity Director for The Nation Magazine, where I earned regular national media, including placements on The Colbert Report, The Today Show, ABC's This Week, Good Morning America and all three nightly network newscasts. I built the magazine's multimedia strategy and produced a weekly radio show, and I handled "war-room" press on major investigative news stories. Currently I am a Communications Executive at The Atlantic Philanthropies, where I work directly with grantees and programs on communications and media strategy. I also maintain a consulting practice.
Before The Nation, I was the Communications Director for the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. At the Ella Baker Center, I led a comprehensive organizational re-branding, managed media for juvenile justice and police accountability campaigns, and worked with Van Jones to help shape messaging on his "Green Collar Jobs" vision.
From 2000-2005 I was the Outreach Director at Philadelphia's Design for Social Impact, a graphic design and communications firm specializing in non-profits. I led branding and communications campaigns for clients including Planned Parenthood, Environmental Defense, United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Physicians for Human Rights and the Buy Fresh, Buy Local Campaign, which has helped build the market for locally grown and produced foods in over 77 regions nationwide.
As a consultant, I've worked for political campaigns and foundations and I've run publicity campaigns for several books, including Going Rouge: Sarah Palin - An American Nightmare.
I grew up in the planned community of Columbia, Maryland, where I developed a deep aversion to cul-de-sacs. My career began in grassroots organizing. In 1998 I led a successful campaign to save over 5,000 acres of pristine Maryland wilderness, now protected in perpetuity as Chapman Forest.
At the beginning of 2011, I started my own consultancy. My goal is to help progressive organizations make smart choices about communications, avoid media debacles and craft compelling narratives.
I live on the Lower East Side of New York City with my boyfriend and our dog Óskar.
